Vocal Classes Vocal classes give a general introduction to the classical music of North India through singing. Compositions are learned in the most common ragas and students also learn the basic Talas (rhythmic cycles). Aspects of theory and history are also taught and students become familiar with the major styles and forms of Indian music (dhrupad, khyal, thumri, tarana, etc.). Vocal classes presently take place on Monday from 19.10 – 20.20.

The Ali Akbar College of Music – 30 years in Switzerland!

Since its founding in 1985, the Ali Akbar College of Music in Basel, Switzerland, has become one of Europe’s most important centers for the study of the classical music of North India. Its activities include seminars, master classes, private and group instruction and public recitals. In November 2010 the College celebrated its 25th Anniversary with intensive and introductory seminars and a Gala concert. We are so grateful for the wonderful gift of music that our founder, Ustad Ali Akbar Khan, brought to us and we remain dedicated to continue spreading this great tradition in the years to come.

This introductory class is presented in cooperation with the “Studio für Musik der Kulturen – SMK” (Studio for musics of the world’s cultures), a department of the Music Academy, which also presents concerts and workshops of various music traditions from around the world. Vocal classes presently take place on Tuesday evenings from 19.00 to 20.30 and Thursday evenings from 18.30 to 20.00. The AACM – Switzerland Faculty

Pandit Swapan Chaudhuri Born in 1947 in Calcutta, Pandit Swapan Chaudhuri received tabla training from early childhood. He was later trained in the Lucknow Gharana with Pandit Santosh Krishna Biswas and today is one of the best known tabla players of India. He is highly regarded both in solo performances as well as in accompanying some of India’s most distinguished musicians, including Ustad Ali Akbar Khan and Pandit Ravi Shankar. Swapan Chaudhuri is currently the Director of Percussion at the Ali Akbar College of Music in San Rafael, California, and also teaches during the annual seminars of the Ali Akbar College of Music in Basel, Switzerland.
