Salon de Musique
The Ali Akbar College “Salon de Musique” is Basel’s chamber music setting for Indian classical music. The “Salon de Musique” gives listeners a unique opportunity to enjoy the subtleties of Indian music in an intimate atmosphere unencumbered by microphones, loudspeakers and crowded halls – an atmosphere similar to that which flourished in India for centuries under the patronage of the royal courts. The “Salon de Musique” is part of the Ali Akbar College’s new facilities. In addition to being a performance hall, it also serves as a center for seminars, workshops and lecture/demonstrations. In November1997, on the occasion of his 75th Birthday, Ustad Ali Akbar Khan inaugurated the “Salon de Musique” with an intimate concert for patrons, supporters and students of the College. Pandit Swapan Chaudhuri acccompanied Khansahib on tabla and James Pomerantz, a long-time sitar student, played tanpura.
