Sankar P. Chowdhury – Tabla Solo, July 16, 2012

Sankar P. Chowdhury, born to a musical family in 1959, is one of India’s most respected tabla virtuosos and teachers. He is a disciple of the great master, Pandit Swapan Chaudhuri, a representative of the “Lucknow” gharana (school) of tabla playing. In addition to his concerts as an accompanist and soloist, Sankar spends two months each year in Basel, as a guest teacher at the Ali Akbar College of Music. In addition to the Tabla solo performance, Frank Fischer will also present a sarod recital, accompanied by Harprit Singh on Tabla. Frank Fischer is a performer and teacher of classical guitar and has also been studying sarod at the Ali Akbar College for a number of years. It is a great pleasure for the Ali Akbar College to welcome guest artists Indrani Mukherjee and Apurba Mukherjee for an evening recital at the Musik-Akademie on Saturday, November 19, 2011 at 8 PM. Our yearly seminar will take place again in November from the 21st to the 28th, and will include several special events to mark this important milestone, including a gala concert on November 27th. The details will be posted here in the coming weeks. They main events will include: November 21 to 28 – Annual Seminar for beginning, intermediate and advanced students. November 26 to 28 – Introductory seminar (Schnupperkurs), for those who wish to take part in a short introduction to Indian music. Maestro Ali Akbar Khan passed away on June 18, 2009

Maestro Ali Akbar Khan passed away peacefully on the evening of June 18, 2009, surrounded by his family and close disciples. He was 87 years old and had been suffering from kidney disease for several years. Khansahib’s long life and career spanned epochs and continents. He was one of the last “court musicians” of the old India and was the first Indian musician to record in the West. Yehudi Menuhin, who invited him to perform and record in the USA in 1955, called him “an absolute genius – perhaps the greatest musician in the world.” Ali Akbar Khan was the only son of Allauddin Khan, a legendary musician who revolutionized Indian instrumental music and trained some of India’s most renowned musicians, including his son and Ravi Shankar.
